That same day, I learned of his passing &#8211; it felt like a quiet, touching coincidence. I read his portrait as we drove into the palette of an earthy red landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here in Utah, I began to understand the Southwest &#8211; a term I hadn&#8217;t thought much about until flipping through &#8220;Knowing the West&#8221;.
