Utah

After a long drive to Kanab, we arrived to find Sebastian Salgado’s book waiting at the door of our Airbnb. That same day, I learned of his passing – it felt like a quiet, touching coincidence. I read his portrait as we drove into the palette of an earthy red landscape.

Here in Utah, I began to understand the Southwest – a term I hadn’t thought much about until flipping through “Knowing the West”. I felt a connection to the region’s art; images of weaving, pottery and beaded shoes stood out, reminding me of similar traditions in my mother’s Peranakan heritage.

Bryce was beautiful, with hoodoos standing bold against one another, as we watched the light past them in sunset.
