June 18th – 21st, 2020 | Birthday Weekend | Millions of Mosquitoes

June 18th, Thursday

It was a Thursday when we drove out to Stanislaus National Forest. Camp sites have just opened up since shelter in place.

We arrived as the sun was setting. Drove to the first campground and to our dismay, it was full. So we kept on, drove to the next campground, and the next, and the next…. All 10 campgrounds in the forest were fully occupied, with huge groups of people partying and giant trailers blasting music. We were looking for tranquility and a tiny space to build our tent.

So we left Stanislaus. It was 10pm by now; we decided to find a dispersed site outside of the national forest to camp. I felt a sense of relief as the campground noise drifted further and further away from us.

I often wonder, why do people camp in large groups? Why do people blast their radio or play terrible pop music when they are outdoors? For us, we head to nature to seek silence, isolation and to be closer to it. To hear the birds sing, revel in the spring blossoms and immerse in the colors of sunset. To look up at night and be surrounded by millions of glistening stars, and realize we are minuscule in the entire Universe.

June 19th, Friday

After breakfast, we drove out and found a deserted campground. Situated by a meadow, it was the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes as the snow from the mountains melted. Millions of mosquitoes buzzed around us but as night fell, they gradually dispersed, each into their nesting ground as they call it a day.
